Who will win?
What is the origin of The Wooden Spoon?
A “wooden spoon” is a tongue-in-cheek term for a dubious honour. It refers to the team that finishes dead last in the league standings at the end of a season. No one’s aiming to “win” it, that’s for sure.
The phrase comes from a British tradition, originally tied to Cambridge University in the 19th century, where students who scored the lowest in exams were mockingly “awarded” a wooden spoon as a booby prize. It’s stuck around in sports as a way to poke fun at the bottom-dwellers.
